  • Biography

    Martin Ostoja-Starzewski did his undergraduate studies at the Cracow University of Technology, Poland, followed by Master's and Ph.D. degrees at McGill University, Canada, all in mechanical engineering. He wrote over 100 journal papers and a book, set broadly in mechanics, materials science, applied mathematics/physics and geophysics. He co-edited 10 books/journal special issues and co-organized numerous meetings, including a NATO Adv. Res. Workshop (1993); a Course at CISM, Udine, Italy (2000); 8th Pan American Cong. Appl. Mechanics (2004); and 20th Canadian Cong. Appl. Mechanics (2005). He is a co-Editor-in-Chief of a Book Series Modern Mechanics and Mathematics, Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics and a member of editorial boards of Journal of Thermal Stresses, Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, Actual Problems of Aviation and Aerospace Systems, and International Journal of Damage Mechanics.

  • Research

    Martin's work straddles mechanics and transport phenomena in random/multiscale/fractal media, stochastic wave propagation, continuum mechanics and thermodynamics, computational mechanics. His research at Beckman is focused on MRI-based studies of head trauma. This involves challenges in image analysis, rheology of brain tissues, mechanics without separation of scales, wavefront evolutions, and microstructure-based finite elements. Related topics in other composite materials involved polymers, bone, polycrystals, granular and porous media, as well as helices.
